The Förderverein Deutsches Pumpen-Museum e.V. was founded as a good-will gesture to save equipment from the "history of engineering" from the junk yard and to exhibit them.
The society registered in Mainz on October 23, 1986 under the Registry No. 2289, pursues solely and directly non-profit goals related to building and maintaining the museum, purchasing exhibits, obtaining objects as loans or gifts, building demonstration models, expanding the engineering library which documents the development of pump designs. As a product museum the intention of the pump collection is to educate the public, present tangible evidence of historical developments and present exhibits from different technological periods.
The museum was brought under the umbrella of the "Stiftung Berdelle-Hilge Deutsches Pumpen-Museum", a foundation, on September 2, 1994, to ensure the preservation and expansion of the equipment collection. It is a legally recognized non-profit foundation under German civil law.
On an exhibition surface area of over 400 m² visitors can view the most important pump designs from 2300 years of engineering history , including the Archimedean Screw, piston pumps, spiral and vane pumps, early fire fighting pumps, bellows pumps, the development of hand-operated centrifuges and the first industrially manufactured centrifugal pumps, the introduction of variable speeds, and the standard pump built to the German industrial standard DIN 24255.
In other rooms visitors can follow the development of beverage pumps from the bellows to the world's first wine pump and view the history of the brewery pump starting from the first beer pressure regulator. In one separate room wood cuts and copper engravings illustrate progress in pump technology in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The first technical literature, original scientific works on the subject of hydraulics, and pump pamphlets from 19th century are on display.
If you would like to make a contribution to the museum and you have any pre-1920, out-of-service pumps suitable for the collection, please contact us. You can also support our work by becoming a member of the society.
